6 ways to get rid of exercise equipment in the DMV

Does Washington DC pick up exercise equipment?

Only for some addresses, only on an appointment, and only if the machine is already at the curb. DC DPW runs a free Bulk Trash Collection program — you request it through 311 or at dpw.dc.gov — and a treadmill can go out on it. But read the eligibility line carefully, because it's where most people on this page fall out:

• Single-family homes and buildings of three units or fewer only. That's the whole service population.
• Up to seven items per appointment, on the date DPW gives you — not today.
• Renovation and construction debris is not accepted, so a basement gym demo with drywall or subfloor in it is out.
• Condos, co-ops and apartment buildings of four or more units are excluded entirely and must have bulk items removed by a private, licensed hauler.

That last bullet is not a technicality — it's structural. If your Peloton is in a Navy Yard, NoMa, West End, Rosslyn, Ballston or Tysons tower, the free program was never available to you and hiring a private hauler is the only compliant route. And even in a row house where the program does apply, it's curbside: DPW's truck stops at the street. DMV home gyms don't live at the street. They live in English basements and cellars under Capitol Hill, Petworth and Brookland row houses, and in the finished basement rec rooms of Bethesda, Chevy Chase, McLean and Vienna. Getting a 300-pound treadmill up a narrow flight of century-old basement stairs is the actual job — and it's the part no free program does.

Across the river and up the Beltway it's the same shape with different paperwork: Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax County each run their own scheduled or on-call bulk-collection programs, each with its own item caps and exclusions. Confirm your jurisdiction's rules with your county before you count on it — and know that all of them are curbside, none of them are same-day, and none of them will disassemble a squat rack for you.

What happens to your equipment after pickup

A treadmill is one of the more recoverable things we haul, because it's mostly steel and electronics rather than upholstery. So it gets sorted, not dumped. Anything still usable is routed to donation first — A Wider Circle in Silver Spring takes household goods for families moving out of homelessness and issues a tax receipt on request, and it's the DMV partner that most often says yes when the thrift chains say no. Steel frames, racks, bars and plate weights go to metal scrap, which is where the mass of a home gym actually ends up. Consoles, touchscreens and motor electronics go to e-waste — DC, Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Fairfax County and Arlington all run recycling drop-offs for exactly this. What genuinely can't be recovered is tipped responsibly at the Fairfax I-66 Transfer Station or the I-95 landfill and energy-recovery complex, or at Montgomery County's Shady Grove facility. Disposal in the DMV isn't cheap — Fairfax County's own commercial rate is about $90 a ton for FY2026 — and it's already inside your flat price.

Basements, walk-ups, and the buildings that need a COI

Where the machine sits is the whole difficulty of this job, and it's why we quote it as one number instead of "plus stairs."

English basements and cellars. Capitol Hill, Petworth and Brookland row houses put the gym at the bottom of a narrow, steep, often turning staircase built long before anyone owned a treadmill. We carry it up and out — there is no stair fee and no basement surcharge on any DC, Maryland or Virginia address.

Home gyms come apart. A cable machine or squat rack will not clear a basement doorway assembled. We break it down on site the same way we split a sectional for a service elevator — uprights, pulleys, cable stacks, plate posts — carry it up in pieces, and take the hardware with it. That's included in the $240.

High-rise Pelotons. For Navy Yard, NoMa, West End, The Wharf, Rosslyn, Ballston and Tysons buildings we file a certificate of insurance 48–72 hours ahead naming the management company or association as additional insured, and we reserve the freight-elevator and loading-dock window the building requires. That's the standard across DC, Arlington and the newer Virginia towers, and it's the paperwork most one-truck operators can't produce. No high-rise surcharge either.

Historic and tight-access addresses. Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria and Capitol Hill mean narrow vintage stairs, historic finishes and rear-alley loading. We pad the turns and we bring the truck to the alley rather than block a cobblestone street.

Will DC bulk trash pick up a treadmill?
